Beats By Girlz: Pennsylvania Fall 2018

Join teachers Kendall Martin and and Jen Mitlas for the first BBG Pennsylvania!

Beats By Girlz was developed to create a safe and comfortable place for young women to get involved in music technology while having as much fun as possible. The goal is to provide them with the guidance, access, tools and role-support to develop their interests and ability to pursue career opportunities in music production, composition, engineering, etc - fields where a female demographic is all but lacking. Lessons that give them the opportunity to be a songwriter, a rapper, a producer, an engineer and a collaborator - all of which showcase the fact that if they chose, they can play all of these roles simultaneously and independently. Classes will be held at CCATE - the Center for Culture, Art, Training and Education.

WHEN: Wednesdays, 6-7:30 PM September 12th - December 12th

Beats By Girlz: Intro Ableton Series for ADULTS

Join acclaimed producer and electronic musician Christine Hoberg in a comprehensive sequential class series that will give students a solid foundation of Ableton Live + Push and electronic music production fundamentals using curriculum developed by Erin Barra (Berklee College of Music, Coursera, Beats by Girlz founder).  No experience necessary and all equipment provided.

Classes are held in a stimulating environment with approximately eight learners and two teachers. A typical class starts with a group lesson and is followed by individual work time. 

Who:  Women and non-binary adults, ages 19-119

Join Elana Carroll (Beats By GirlzParty Nails) and DanielleThwaites (Beats By GirlzDaiza) for Ableton Live Series 2, an immersive workshop for the intermediate user and professional musician, with a focus on live playback design. This class will cover everything you need to know to use Ableton in your live show, whether you are looking for a more creative approach to performance or if you are just researching your options.

DAY ONE covers importing/timing audio stems, arrangement via scene, BPM automation, and monitor mixing.

DAY TWO covers automating patch changes (i.e. chain selectors), triggers, MIDI mapping, I/O, and hardware options.

HLAG + BBG 2018

Hit Like A Girl is an annual drumming contest for female percussionists. Beats By Girlz will be collaborating with HLAG to offer a new Rhythm Technology category for this year’s contest. We are very excited about this addition to our contest.

HLAG + BBG 2018 is the first annual global drum programming contest for female producers. Its purpose is to spotlight female beat makers/producers and encourage females to engage in music technology. The event is produced by Hit Like A Girl Contest in partnership with Beats By Girlz and our activities are made possible by the generous support of our partners, Ableton, ROLI and Sensel.

 

Submissions will be accepted March 1st through April 13th.

Live Performance with Ableton

Deep bass producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist Aimerie (aka Kaite Watson) will share her experience performing at music festivals like Even Furthur and clubs such as the Exchange as well as being a lessons instructor at Slam Academy. The focus on this class will be learning the skills to augment your sound and learn the fundamentals of performance of Ableton Live 9 with MIDI controllers.  Launch clips and scenes, control effect racks, incorporate external instruments, finger drum and more!

Participants should be able to write their own music, but all genres welcome including acoustic singer-songwriters wishing to expand their sound. Experience with a DAW (e.g. GarageBand, Logic, Ableton, etc) is recommended, but not required.  Equipment will be provided, but students may also bring in their own computers and gear with instructor approval.  Kaite is also available for private lessons. In addition, Beats by Girlz founder Erin Barra has a free 4-week Intro to Ableton Live course on Coursera which includes a 30-day trial for the software: https://www.coursera.org/learn/ableton-live

Beats By Girlz: Beat Making Basics & Open Lab

Learn the basics of beat-making and step-sequencing taught by music educator, producer and multi-instrumentalist Laiken Strobush.  The external instrument for this class will be an Akai XR20 Beat Machine, and students will collaboratively program hip hop beats. Returning students are also welcome, you'll have access to a computer with Ableton Live and Push MIDI controller to work on tracks and be able to ask personalized questions to learn new tricks to advance your skills.  No experience necessary and all equipment provided.  Family is invited to come for the last 15 minutes of class to listen to the tracks created in class which will also be posted online.

Ableton is proud to partner with McNally Smith College of Music for a day of free activities that are open to music makers of all abilities.

Ableton Brand Manager Thomas Faulds will give an introduction to Ableton Live and Push for those who may be new to computer music production. Ableton Certifed Trainer Leon Jarwoski will dig deeper into EDM (electronic dance music) studio production and Live performance. And we are delighted to welcome Berklee College of Music professor Erin Barra who will explore Songwriting techniques and perform some of her own songs by way of demonstration.
